WHAT HAPPENS IN A YOGA CLASS?

A yoga class is made up of stretching exercises (asanas), breathing techniques (pranayama) and relaxation.

The class starts with a few quiet moments to prepare mentally and a warm-up to prepare physically. There will be a series of asana (stretching the body in different ways, each person will stretch to their comfortable maximum, hold the position breathing steadily and then release when they are ready. The asanas work systematically on all parts of your body - strengthening and toning muscles and ligaments, keeping spine and joints flexible and improving circulation). There is a pose which affects every muscle, organ and gland in the body, and is working subtly on all levels of your being - mentally and emotionally as well.

A yoga classes also includes breathing exercises (pranayama). Yoga teaches you to breathe fully and rhythmically, making use of all, not just part of your lungs, to increase intake of oxygen. Some breathing techniques are energising and stimulating, some are cleansing whilst others are relaxing & calming

The class always finishes with 15 minutes of relaxation to release tension in the muscles and rests your body and mind, leaving you calm but energised. You'll feel the effects for many hours afterwards and learn to let go of any negative thoughts or emotions.

HOW WILL I KNOW IF THE CLASS IS SUITABLE FOR ME?

Classes are for mixed abilities and therefore are suitable for beginners as well as for those with more experience. You start from where you are at this moment. Each individual works within her/his own level of comfort listening to their own body's messages.
Yoga is completely non-competitive. Each person is coming to Yoga for their own health and well being. We come away from our practice feeling energised, but calm and ready to deal situations on any level.

People are drawn to Yoga for various reasons, many first come as a way of improving their body's flexibility and strength. Others come seeking help or relief for a specific complaint, like asthma or tension.

All are welcome, male or female, young or old, fit and not so fit.

WILL I BE ABLE TO DO EVERYTHING?

Listen to your body, accept your limitations, don't be too ambitious at first and remember, there is no competition in Yoga, everyone works to their own ability. For your safety, please let me know if you suffer from any medical conditions e.g. high/low blood pressure, back/neck problems, epilepsy, pregnancy etc. and ask your doctor if you have any doubts.

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO PRACTICE?

Practice once a week to gradually release tension. Practice twice a week to maintain good health. Practice 3-5 times a week to shape your body and mind, and transform your life!

WHAT SHOULD I WEAR?

Whatever you feel most comfortable in, providing it will not hinder movement, e.g. leggings and T-shirt. Bring a sweater for warmth in case you need it. No shoes, barefoot is best.

WHAT SHOULD I BRING WITH ME?

A non-slip mat (obtainable for purchase from me if necessary) and a blanket to wrap up in during relaxation if the weather is cold.

CAN I EAT BEFORE CLASS?

It is best not to eat before for about 2 hours before a class, mainly because it is uncomfortable to have food in the stomach when you're bending, twisting, and exerting yourself. If you need to eat before a class, give as much time as you can and eat lightly; yogurt and fruit for example.

I do hope this answers all your questions, but if there is anything else you would like to know or you wish to enrol into one of my classes, please phone or email.
